Deconstructed Dish Festival of the ARts

Deconstructed Apple Pie Disney Recipe

This sweet treat combines Apple Pie filling with gelato, cider, and streusel. Perfect for the fall season, we also like this as a winter treat alongside hot tea or coffee.

Deconstructed Apple Pie Ingredients

Deconstructed Apple Pie à la Mode Ingredients

This recipe makes enough for about 2 large, or 4 small servings.

  • 1 pint Apple-Cinnamon Gelato ( using 2 scoops per person)
  • 4 tbsp Cinnamon Syrup ( We used Torani Brown Sugar Cinnamon Syrup)
  • 1/2 c. Apple Cider
  • 1 c. graham cracker crumbs. or crushed graham crackers.
  • Apple Pie Filling ( Homemade)
    • 4 organic apples, peeled and cored
    • 1/2 c. brown sugar
    • 2 tbsp butter/vegan butter
  • Streusel
    • 3/4 c. flour
    •  1/4 c. brown sugar
    • 1/8 c. cane or coconut sugar
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • 3 tbsp butter/vegan butter, melted

Apple-Cinnamon Gelato

If you’re wanting to make this gelato from scratch you absolutely can! Though there are a few brands that have excellent versions of this flavor. Talenti Gelato comes in a variety of flavors featuring cinnamon, so don’t make this hard on yourself, just pick the best one you can find at your local grocery. Perry’s Ice Cream and Ben and Jerry’s have a Cinnamon Buns ice cream flavor that is similar, and Jeni’s Ice Cream does a Cinnamon Roll flavor that is also comparable.

Gelato is a softer and lighter texture than ice cream, so if you’re struggling to find a cinnamon gelato, you can also modify a vanilla gelato. Simply swirl about 1/2 c. cinnamon syrup into 1-pint vanilla gelato. Then refreeze, before using.

How to make apple pie filling

Cinnamon Syrup

Cinnamon Syrup is easy to make as a simple syrup. You can check out a Cinnamon Simple Syrup Recipe or buy a bottle of Torani Brown Sugar Cinnamon Syrup. As much as a bottle of cinnamon syrup may seem like a small investment, we find it can be used in loads of fall and holiday drinks come the cold season.

Apple Cider

The best Apple Cider comes from any local apple farm near you. But, can also be easily grabbed at the local grocery store in the produce section near the juices. Please note that you cannot substitute apple juice in this recipe. Not only will the apple flavor be lost, but the milkshake will be watery.

Apple Pie Filling

For the Apple Pie filling in this recipe, we highly ( HIGHLY) recommend making your own pie filling. This is not as difficult as it may sound if you’ve never done this before. Plan on 1 apple per person, as once the apple is cooked a bit it will lose volume. The recipe below is to accommodate 4 people, so adjust accordingly.

  • 4 organic apples, peeled and cored
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter/vegan butter

Instructions

Organic apples are typically a little smaller and free from chemicals and pesticides. Dice the peeled and cored apples into 1/2-inch thick squares. Once diced, mix them in a bowl with the brown sugar to coat. Let sit. Meanwhile, melt the 2 tbsp of butter in a small shallow frying pan over medium heat. Add apple brown sugar mixture, careful to let the butter, sugars are apples burn. Lower heat and stir until the apples soften.  Once softened remove from heat and let sit. The apples will have deflated a bit, as the juices are mixed with the sugars and butter, and you should have a bit of that liquid still in the pan.

How to make Streusel topping for ice cream

Streusel

The streusel topping in this recipe provides buttery sugary clumps that remind us of pie topping. so delicious and worth the effort! Feel free to adjust these measurements for the number of people you’re serving. This is appropriate for about 4 people.

  • 3/4 c. flour
  •  1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1/8 c. cane or coconut sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp butter/vegan butter, melted

Instructions

To make this streusel, mix the cinnamon, sugars, and flour in a bowl. Add in the melted butter, and toss with a fork just lightly until it has coated everything. Once mixed, let sit, while you prepare the rest of the Deconstructed Apple Pie.

Deconstructed Apple Pie à la Mode Instructions

Once you’ve gathered all the ingredients and prepared both the apple pie filling and the streusel, you’re ready for the easy part! Assembly! Grab a small glass, custard cup of a parfait glass, and layer the ingredients as follows.

Per Glass Instructions

  1. Add 1/8 c. apple cider
  2. Layer 1/2 cup apple pie filling
  3. Add a 1/4 c. streusel mix
  4. Add 2 scoops of gelato to each glass
  5. Add 1 tbsp cinnamon syrup
  6. Top with graham cracker crumbs

Frankly, this treat is delicious, and best served while the apples are still warm. As a deconstructed apple pie, the consistency is that of an affogato, with liquid from the cider, mixing with the gelato, syrup, and apples. Best eaten with a spoon, this treat is wonderful for any apple pie fan.
