Cold Butterbeer Recipe from Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Butterbeer. That rich, creamy, buttery concoction from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We love it and just can’t get enough! We love it in all varieties, Hot, cold, frozen. They’re all delicious. And since we don’t live near Universal Studios to get our fix whenever we want, we decided to make our own at home. Here’s our very own Cold Butterbeer Recipe so you can make your own at home too!

How to Make Butterbeer at Home

We’ve shared our love for all things butterbeer before.  We even have a Butterbeer Latte Recipe that is just divine. And every year, we have a Harry Potter Movie marathon in the dark winter months of Ohio; so butterbeer is a must.  But let’s face it.  Butterbeer is good for any occasion. Whether you’re watching the Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts movies, reading the books, or just want a little extra magic in your life, butterbeer is always a great choice! While we’re sharing our recipe for cold butterbeer here, if you’re wondering how to make warm butterbeer, you can find that in our pancakes post featuring our Warm Butterbeer Recipe.

Our cold butterbeer copycat recipe is copied after what we’ve had at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios in the past.  But we know it’s likely not perfect. I mean, we are just mere muggles after all. Feel free to play around with this recipe. And adjust however you like! Want it less sweet? Just add less syrup.  If you need to make it dairy free, you can skip the dairy and use a nondairy alternative. Note: butter extract generally does have dairy in it. So, if you need it dairy free or vegan, you can just omit this and use imitation or eliminate it completely for a less buttery flavor.  We love this Vanilla Oat Creamer for a dairy free foam on top! There are lots of ways to customize this to your liking, so we hope you enjoy it!

Believe it or not, Butterbeer is actually super easy to recreate. And you’ll just need six ingredients! Plus, since you can use these same ingredients for all your butterbeer recipes, like Butterbeer Pie with Marshmallow Fluff, you can consider these a good investment! To make butterbeer at home, here’s what you’ll need:

Almost all of these things can be gotten at the grocery store, Target and Amazon. Plus the syrups have a decent shelf life too so you won’t need to use them up all at one. And of course, if you want the full effect, a cute Harry Potter inspired glass is always a great little add on.  Other things that are helpful to have include a milk frother and something to measure your syrups in ounces. We just use a jigger from our bar tools set. This is definitely not necessary though, as you can always guesstimate when you’re pouring anyway.

  • 2 oz Butterscotch Syrup, divided

  • 1/4 c. half and half
  • 1/4 c. heavy cream

Butterbeer Recipe Instructions

  1. Add ice to a glass
  2. Add 1/2 oz caramel syrup and 1 oz butterscotch syrup to glass.
  3. Top with cream soda leaving room for foam
  4. Froth together 1/4c. heavy cream, 1/4 c. half and half, 3-5 drops butter extract and remaining 1 oz butterscotch syrup until thick and foamy.
  5. Pour foam on top of cream soda mixture.

How to make Butterbeer Foam

To make a butterbeer foam, you will need to a frother. You can use a handheld frother, or a standalone one. Some coffee makers even come with a frother tool that you can also use. To make a butterbeer foam, grab a container that has a pour spout. We typically use a glass or stainless steel frothing cup with a spout, but any kind will do. It’s best to put your frothing cup in the freezer for a few minutes to get it cold, this helps the foam rise a bit more.

Once you have your equipment ready, you can grab your ingredients; 1 oz Butterscotch Syrup, 3-5 drops Butter Extract, 1/4 c. half and half, and 1/4 c. heavy cream. Add all of the ingredients to the frothing container, and begin frothing. If you’re using a handheld frother, this could take about 3-5 minutes. Be patient. You’ll know that your Butterbeer Foam is ready when it’s about doubled in size, and foamy. Here are all the instructions step by step so you can follow along.

Add Syrups to Ice filled Glass

To make butterbeer at home, start with your syrups. We like to use 1:2 parts caramel:butterscotch. But you can adjust this if you like a different ratio. These can be poured in your glass first. They don’t technically have to go first, but since they’re denser than the cream soda, they’ll just sink anyway.

Add Cream Soda

Pour your cream soda on top and give it a little stir. We like the Ollipop Cream Soda best since it adds a little probiotic kick, but you can use any of your favorite old fashioned cream soda for the same kind of flavor.

Make the Butterbeer Foam

Making a Butterbeer Cold Foam is easier than it looks, and you can use it to top pretty much anything. For this drink, we mix the remaining butterscotch syrup, butter extract, half and half and heavy cream. Note that while all of these things can be substituted for non-dairy options, you will have to do some testing to get it the right consistency.

  • 1 oz Butterscotch Syrup
  • 3-5 drops Butter Extract
  • 1/4 c. half and half
  • 1/4 c. heavy cream

Add Foam to Cold Butterbeer

Once the Butterbeer Foam is nice and foamy, pour it over top of your cream soda and enjoy! See how simple that is? And if you want it a little boozy, add some butterscotch schnapps for an extra kick. So there you have it, our butterbeer copycat recipe!  This is such a flavorful, and luscious drink, we hope you love it as much as we do.
